'It was the call I hoped I'd never take'


The remains of a 24-year-old ex-British soldier who died in combat while fighting in Ukraine will return to his parents’ home in County Fermanagh on Friday. Liam Love will be laid to rest after a funeral service at St. Patrick’s Church in Derrygonnelly on Saturday. Michael Love, Liam’s father, referred to his son as a brave and determined soldier. The father was heartbroken to hear of Liam’s death, and he stated that it was the call he dreaded and prayed would never happen.

The elder Love spoke about his son’s enlistment in the British Army at the age of 18 and his subsequent deployment to Afghanistan. He added that Liam was drawn to the struggles faced by Ukrainian soldiers and decided to participate in the fight against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Liam was killed on 28 April 2021 in Luhansk Oblast. The Love family said they are grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received.

The death of the former soldier in Ukraine has caused immense grief and sparked calls for greater protection for those who risk their lives to join front-line military units. Liam joined the Haydamaky battalion, which was formed by Ukrainian military veterans, last year. He fought against Russian-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country, where thousands of lives have been lost in a conflict that began in 2014.

Members of the regiment expressed their condolences, with many saying that Liam Love was an exceptional soldier who laid down his life fighting for a cause in which he believed. The Haydamaky battalion is made up mostly of Ukrainian Obolon Corporation workers, doctors, students, and IT professionals. Many foreign volunteers have joined this unit since its founding
