Scottish comedian Janey Godley has passed away at the age of 63 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She has been receiving palliative care after being forced to cancel her ‘Why Is She Still Here?’ tour in September due to her illness. Godley was renowned for her viral dubbed videos of Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid briefings during the pandemic and her protest against Donald Trump’s 2016 visit to Scotland.
In a moving video posted on social media, Godley’s daughter Ashley Storrie thanked Ms Godley’s “found family” for their support “throughout these last horrible days”. She mentioned a number of loved ones and thanked them for their kindness during the difficult time. Storrie also thanked Ms Godley followers for their support, saying that she believed her mother felt every bit of love they sent.
Godley had revealed she had ovarian cancer in November 2021, but was given the all-clear in 2022. Unfortunately, a later scan discovered signs of the disease again. Born in the east end of Glasgow in 1961, Godley was a pub landlady before establishing herself on the comedy circuit. Her daughter Ashley Storrie, who also works in comedy, followed her mother onto the comedic stage and is best known for her role in BBC Three’s Dinosaur.
Godley was hugely popular for the viral videos she made in which she dubbed over Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish Covid briefings, which made her an unlikely and yet trusted and engaging source of information during the pandemic. In 2016 she went viral again after she was pictured holding a placard with an offensive word at a protest against Donald Trump on his visit to Scotland.
Condolences have flooded in for Godley, including from Nicola Sturgeon, who commented that “Janey was also incredibly kind. And she made the world a better place. In the toughest of times, she made people laugh – and that was precious.” Among those paying tribute were First Minister John Swinney, who wrote on Twitter that Godley “brought joy and laughter on many occasions when we needed it most.” Julia McKenzie, Radio 4 comedy commissioning editor, said Godley was a “brilliant storyteller who embodied the stoic nature of Glasgow
