On Saturday morning, the Conservative Party will elect a new leader after Rishi Sunak stepped down. Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick are presently competing for the position. Badenoch seemed to be the frontrunner for the role based on what people are saying, but it is difficult to determine the actual outcome of the poll. According to those in the contest, voter turnout will undoubtedly be lower than 2019’s election, with one campaign insider estimating that it will be less than 70%.
On Saturday, the candidates will arrive separately and each will have their own preparation area. After they are notified of the results, they will attempt to maintain composure and depart for the results room, while the rest of the attendees will have no information about the outcome at that point. The party chairman will give a brief speech before the chairman of the 1922 Committee reads the election results.
The victor delivers a speech, while the loser stays in their place. Following the speech, senior Conservative Party members will be available for comment. After that, the party leader will proceed to Conservative campaign headquarters in London, sign documents, and put together a shadow cabinet.
The previous candidates to take on the role of opposition leader struggled to secure power for a long period of time. After the 1997 general election, it took the Conservatives 13 years and four leaders to gain office again, while it took Labour 14 years and three leaders after their ousting in 2010
