Wiltshire chippy praised for response to online review

The owner of Robinson’s Traditional Fish & Chips in Wiltshire, England has gained praise for calling out an online reviewer for making an inappropriate comment about a female delivery driver. The review, which was posted on the online delivery platform Just Eat, read: “Really hot food always great from Robinsons also hot delivery girl.” The shop replied to the review, saying: “Thanks for the kind review of the food, we will make sure a male delivers your food from now on.”

Owner Philip Robinson explained that he felt it was important to set boundaries and ensure that his staff feel comfortable at work. He said that while the comment may seem harmless, he wanted to make sure that staff are not subjected to any harassment or discomfort. Robinson, who has a partner and sister, said he would want their employers to act in the same way.

Robinson was only informed about the review when the shop’s manager texted him to tell him it had been reposted on Facebook. He said he was confident the incident would not be repeated, but that if it does, he or the manager of the shop would make sure the order is delivered “without any fuss.”

The incident has gained attention from local charities that work to promote gender equality and combat harassment. Fiona Oliver, joint CEO of the Wiltshire Community Foundation, which launched a Women and Girls Fund earlier this year, applauded Robinson’s response and said that “harassment, stereotyping, and discrimination targeted toward women and girls happens far too often.” Oliver added that the impact of such behaviour can affect victims and that it’s important to talk about these matters and call out inappropriate behaviour.

The Wiltshire Community Foundation is running a male allyship event on November 22 to raise awareness of gender inequality and discrimination.
