A big week ahead and a chance for a government reset


The upcoming week is an important one for British politics and will signify the end of the post-election era and the beginning of what is to come. The Conservative Party will elect their new leader on Saturday, replacing the current symbol of the past, Rishi Sunak. This new leader will become a pivotal character of the years ahead. Additionally, on Wednesday, the much-anticipated Budget will be published.

The conservatives have spent the last four months trying to reorganize themselves in opposition, while the Labour party is going through a period of adjustment as they try to settle into their governmental roles. The Labour party, in particular, has been experiencing a stuttery start, leading to frustration among its members. However, the next week presents an opportunity to reset their positions and shape the political landscape ahead.

Before the Budget is released, the current British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, will be undertaking a body-clock smashing and jet lag-inducing 20,000-mile round-trip to the tropical south Pacific. He is the first sitting UK Prime Minister to visit a small Pacific Island nation. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is an important event for the UK, with the King and Queen in attendance. This region, the Indo-Pacific, is becoming economically crucial for the UK post-Brexit.

The Budget is expected to contain both spending cuts and tax rises, mainly targeted at those whom the government sees as relatively well-off and with some capital gains tax, inheritance tax, or significant pension savings.
