A 17-year-old teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been sentenced to life in custody with a minimum of 12 years after attempting to murder three people with a hammer at Blundell’s School in Tiverton, Devon. The attack took place during the early hours of 9 June 2023 and left two roommates, aged 15 and 16 at the time, with severe injuries while housemaster Henry Roffe-Silvester suffered six wounds to his head. The defendant had armed himself with three claw hammers, fearing a “zombie apocalypse”. He waited for his roommates to fall asleep before attacking them.
During the trial, the teenager, who claimed he was sleepwalking during the incident, admitted assaulting the victims, though he claimed he would be not guilty of attempted murder by reason of insanity.
