Liam Payne fans in Buenos Aires pay 'bittersweet' tribute

Fans of One Direction have gathered outside the Buenos Aires hotel where Liam Payne died after falling from a balcony. Some left scrawled notes with an excerpt from a One Direction lyric, flowers and candles. Payne was himself a member of the band, which embarked on a global tour in 2014. Sombre crowds outside the CasaSur Hotel reflect the grisly nature of the incident – he allegedly fell from his balcony after police arrived, following reports of visitors fearing for his life. Footage of the aftermath of the incident was leaked on social media before the singer’s loved ones had been informed. Payne’s messy hotel room contained Clonazepam and he was known to have struggled with drink and mental health. The exact cause of death has yet to be verified.

One of Payne’s fans said “We all just bonded with them. It means the death of our teenage years. We’ve lost hope of the five of them having a reunion. It’s really sad. The way it happened is the saddest part”. Payne had shot to fame aged 16 and died aged 31. Many of his fans were a similar age and had grown up with him. During his journey, Payne spoke out openly about his battles with alcoholism, depression and the difficulties of raising a young family whilst enjoying unprecedented fame. A recent allegation against him of unwanted contact with a former fiancee remains unverified.

Argentinian police are looking into the death and are currently inspecting the area at which he fell. Payne’s body has been taken to a morgue, and his family have been informed, with an ultimate goal of having him returned to the UK. Fans of the former boyband member have been sharing posts on social media about their fond memories of the singer and his music
