Tuchel’s first game in charge of England will be a friendly match against Portugal on 26 March 2025 at Wembley Stadium, before the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup begin later that year.

Tuchel’s appointment could mean a more attacking style of play for England, with a focus on possession and creativity.

He has experience of working with some of the world’s best attacking players at PSG and Bayern Munich, and his ability to adapt his tactics to players’ strengths could see England’s young talent flourish under his leadership.

“It’s very encouraging as an England fan to see someone like Tuchel come in,” said former England captain Rio Ferdinand.

“He’s worked with big stars in the past and with that in mind he can bring that level of expertise into the England job and into England’s changing room.

“I think we’ve got a talented group of young players at the moment and we want them to be playing as much as possible, playing with this flair and freedom, and Thomas Tuchel could be the guy to do that for us.”

Who will be in his squad?

Tuchel’s first squad will not be announced until closer to the Portugal friendly, but there are a number of players who are likely to feature.

Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford are all established members of the England set-up, while Tuchel’s experience of working with Chelsea players such as Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount could see them become key figures for England too.

There are also a number of up-and-coming stars who could benefit from Tuchel’s focus on attacking football, including Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood.

What are the reactions to Tuchel’s appointment?

There has been a mixed response to Tuchel’s appointment as England boss, with some fans excited by his track record of success and ability to develop young players, while others are sceptical about his lack of experience managing international teams.

“Tuchel seems to have a good track record with young players, which could be crucial for England’s long-term future,” said football journalist Amy Lawrence.

“But there are also concerns about his lack of international experience and whether he can adapt his tactics to a new set of players in a short space of time.”

Former England manager Sam Allardyce added: “It’s a bold appointment, but it’s also a risky one. Tuchel has never managed an international team before and that’s a big challenge.

“He’ll have to learn quickly and adapt his tactics to international football, which can be very different to club football. It’s a tough job, but if anyone can do it, Tuchel can.”
