Myles, a 22-year-old chef from Wimbledon, collapsed during a boxing match in Kingston on Saturday. Nina Sarpong, Myles’ mother, was in the audience when he suffered a cardiac arrest. CPR was performed on Myles for 10 minutes before he was taken to St. George’s hospital. Doctors put him into a medically induced coma and performed a CT scan that revealed a bleed on his brain. This forced surgeons to remove a section of his skull to relieve pressure. Myles remains in neuro-intensive care in a coma.
During the match, Myles was struck in the head and collapsed early in the second round. Nina Sarpong recounts the event, “Myles took a blow to his head, he was unsteady and fell to the ground. At that point, I just couldn’t look, so I left.” Paramedics were called to the scene, where Myles remained lying on the floor surrounded by 20 people. It is still unknown whether Myles’ cardiac arrest caused permanent brain damage.
Myles began boxing to stay fit and improve his mental health. He would go on to have only two competitive fights, the second of which put him in the hospital. Myles worked as a chef at a café in Wimbledon for the last four years before the incident. His mother had to close her store in Wallingford to be close to Myles in the hospital.
A fundraising page was set up by Nina’s sister to help cover the costs of living and hotel accommodations while the family attends to Myles. So far, almost £12,000 has been raised. “He’s such a lovely boy, there’s been such lovely things said about him,” Nina said. “I sit by his bedside, and I say ‘so many people are thinking about you and praying for you, wishing you well.’”
