BBC weather presenter Calum MacColl bursts into song live on air


Calum MacColl is a familiar face to regular viewers of BBC Scotland’s weather reports. Well, now it seems he has an unexpected musical talent, which he decided to share live on air. On the Friday episode of Reporting Scotland, MacColl stunned presenter Sally Magnusson and viewers by breaking into song. He chose to perform the traditional Gaelic song which won him a gold medal at the 2021 Royal National Mòd.

Magnusson, clearly impressed by the performance, even got up to dance around the studio while MacColl sang. But it was clear that MacColl was also a consummate professional, seamlessly switching back into presenting mode as soon as he finished singing.

The Royal National Mòd is an annual festival celebrating Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage. Organized by An Comunn Gàidhealach (The Highland Association), the first Mòd was held in Oban in 1891. The festival features a range of competitive events across various disciplines, including Gaelic music and song, highland dancing, instrumental performances, drama, sport, and literature.

This year, the festival will be held from 11th-19th October in Oban and Argyll. It remains an important cultural event for the area, showcasing the very best of Gaelic culture to visitors from across Scotland and beyond. MacColl’s impromptu performance on Reporting Scotland was a welcome reminder of the rich musical heritage of the region
