Starmer rebukes minister over P&O Ferries ‘boycott’ call


In an unprecedented move from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, he publicly reprimanded one of his cabinet members for comments made discouraging a company from attending an important investment summit. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh stated that she had boycotted P&O Ferries in the past and encouraged others to do the same due to the company’s mass dismissal of workers in 2022 and their replacement with lower-paid agency staff. As a result of these comments, P&O Ferries’ parent company, DP World, announced that they would not attend the investment summit and may postpone an investment announcement.

When questioned about Haigh’s words, Sir Keir admitted that it was not the view of the government and that they would resolve the situation. Haigh had previously expressed these views, but as a Secretary of State, her comments held greater significance. Kevin Hollinrake, the Conservative shadow business secretary, criticized Labour cabinet ministers, suggesting that they had no business experience, didn’t understand business, and had no idea how to talk to businesses.

Senior government officials are “incensed” at these boycott comments from a cabinet minister- particularly in the midst of the government attempting to establish a “pro-business” administration. The prime minister is working to persuade P&O Ferries to attend the investment event, with ongoing conversations between the government and the company.

Despite this publicized disagreement, Starmer believes that the investment summit demonstrates growing confidence from companies in the UK economy. However, the prime minister could have done without a public dispute with one of his cabinet members and with one of the invited companies
