Baby born at 11oz and kept in sandwich bag goes home to Newport

After 18 months in hospital, Robyn, a baby born weighing only 11oz (328g), has finally been able to go home with her parents, Chantelle and Daniel. Robyn arrived five months early in March 2023 at Grange Hospital in Cwmbran, Torfaen, and still requires round-the-clock care. Her parents, from Malpas, Newport, are raising funds for her continued treatment.

Robyn was born at 23 weeks and two days, so small that she could fit in the palm of a hand. She was even kept in a sandwich bag to keep her vital organs warm during her growth. Six months after her birth, Robyn was moved to the paediatric intensive care unit at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff, where she remained for seven months before returning to Grange until her recent discharge.

Robyn still requires a lot of care, including being fed oxygen and nutrition through tubes in her nose and mouth, with her vital signs being monitored at all times. She takes 30 doses of medication each day, and requires regular suctioning of her mouth and nose, due to being unable to cough.

Despite the challenges, Robyn’s parents are thrilled to have her home. Chantelle, a part-time accountant, spoke happily of being able to do “normal family things”, while Daniel, a self-employed bricklayer, has temporarily reduced his workload in order to focus on Robyn’s care. Though Robyn’s brain damage will have a significant effect on her development, Daniel remains positive about the future, stating that “we know with Robyn nothing is impossible because she’s been told so many times she isn’t gonna do this and she won’t survive this and she does.
