Student finds scorpion crawling inside Shein parcel

When Sofia Alonso-Mossinger received a parcel from fast fashion brand Shein, she was expecting a new pair of boots. What she didn’t expect was a live scorpion hidden inside. The electrical and electronic engineering student unzipped the parcel and saw something move, initially assuming it was a toy. After realising the scorpion was real, she immediately closed the bag and moved it out of her room.

Ms Alonso-Mossinger’s flatmates at the University of Bristol helped resolve the situation by transferring the scorpion to a tub before calling for an expert to collect it. The National Centre for Reptile Welfare (NCRW) sent staff to collect the arachnid and identify it as the relatively venomous Oliviers martensii, commonly known as a Chinese scorpion. Chris Newman, from the NCRW, described the sting of the scorpion as medically significant.

The incident has raised questions about Shein’s delivery methods and has led to other reports of scorpions being found in parcels globally. It also highlights the potential pitfalls of fast fashion, and the lack of sustainability. Although Shein has been approached for comment, no statement has been made about the incident.

Some experts say that the incident underlines the need for greater regulation of online deliveries, and for companies like Shein to face greater scrutiny when it comes to the treatment of their clothing. Oliviers martensii is native to Southeast Asia and is not commonly found in the UK. It is not clear how the scorpion came to be in the package, although there have been reports of similar incidents from other countries. Nonetheless, the authorities have been put on alert to the possibility of other scorpions or dangerous creatures being hidden in fast fashion clothing parcels
