Boki, a brown bear living in the Wildwood Trust near Canterbury, Kent, became the first bear to undergo brain surgery in the UK. The operation, which took five and a half hours instead of the expected two and a half, was performed on Wednesday after an MRI scan in Surrey revealed that he had hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid in the brain. The 2-year-old bear had been suffering from seizures and related health issues and is now said to be doing well following the special surgery.
Specialist wildlife veterinary surgeon, Dr Romain Pizzi, carried out the surgery, which aimed to drain fluid from the bear’s brain, at Wildwood Trust. After the operation, Dr Pizzi said that the bear was a little bit uncomfortable but was bright and alert and mentally active, and taking his medication. Jon Forde, who is head of bears at Wildwood, called Boki a “unique” bear and mentioned that there is no one else like him.
The Wildwood Trust stated that they are pleased with Boki’s recovery so far but are not out of the woods yet. Boki has been checked over by Romain Pizzi and vet, Elliott Simpson-Brown, from IZVG and has been responding well to the treatment. Wildwood’s team will continue to monitor him closely to ensure his recovery and good health.
For his recovery, Boki will need support, a proper diet, and care, all of which will be provided by Wildwood’s team. Boki is a beloved bear, and Wildwood has asked their supporters to help fund Boki’s recovery process, as the treatment costs are expected to be high, and the trust is still on the road to recovery from the pandemic. Wildwood Trust stated that without supporters’ kindness, “we simply would not be able to carry out this vital work in conserving and rewilding some of the UK’s most threatened species.”
Wildwood Trust is a charity organization that conserves and rewilds some of the UK’s most endangered species by propagating habitats, captive breeding, and (re)introducing animals back into their natural environment
