Daniel Khalife: Alleged Iranian spy contacted MI6 to become double agent, court hears

A former UK soldier has stood trial charged with gathering sensitive information for Iran and offering his services as a double agent to MI6. Daniel Khalife sent two emails to MI6 offering to work for them as a double agent while he was gathering information for Iran. Woolwich Crown Court also heard that Mr Khalife travelled to Turkey in August 2020, where he left intelligence intended for Iranian agents. Afterward, he sent an audio message to an unknown person saying that he delivered a package to the agents. Mr. Khalife denies the charges.

Mr. Khalife was said to have offered to work as an agent for the Islamic Republic for 25 years in messages to Iranian intelligence handlers. One handler, known as David Smith, promised to pay him. The court heard Mr. Khalife’s role in the Royal Corps of Signals gave him access to highly sensitive information. The prosecution alleges that even at the age of 17, Mr. Khalife had connections with Iran and was sharing information with them.

The court heard Mr. Khalife was in Texas for a three-month military exercise called Warfighter in February 2021. Pictures of screens of military equipment and a password sheet were found on his phone, indicating his possible involvement in espionage. Mr. Khalife was recommended for promotion to Lance Corporal aged just 20, and he is said to have won a Best Junior Soldier cup as well. Capt. Lewis Fox confirmed that he had won the trophy, which is quite rare for a Signaller.

Mr. Khalife was first arrested in January 2022, and charged with escaping Wandsworth prison eight months later by strapping himself underneath a food delivery van. The trial is ongoing, and the jury heard evidence of Mr. Khalife’s messages to MI6 and the Iranian handlers he worked with. The prosecution aims to prove his guilt, while Mr. Khalife maintains his innocence
