During a press conference ahead of the world premiere of Blitz, actress Saoirse Ronan stated that shooting the World War Two film felt “incredibly relevant” due to the conflicts going on around the world. Directed by Sir Steve McQueen, Blitz was primarily filmed in early 2023, around a year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ronan added that while shooting certain scenes portraying characters in fear and horror, she couldn’t escape it because she’d hear the same thing on the radio or news after leaving the set.
The film opened the London Film Festival on Wednesday and brought together some of its co-stars during the event, including Stephen Graham, Paul Weller, and Benjamin Clementine. The film follows the protagonist, George, played by newcomer Elliott Heffernan, trying to pursue his own adventure after adamantly refusing to leave his family in London to live in the countryside during the Blitz, a decision that leads to greater problems.
Blitz has received rave reviews from several critics. The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey gave the film five stars, calling it “a monumental achievement in British cinema.” The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin also gave it five stars and said the film “ranks among the greatest war films ever made.” However, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw viewed the movie from a different perspective; he gave it three stars and expressed his expectation of a more meaningful challenge or radical shock from the film.
Blitz will be released in cinemas on November 1, before streaming on Apple TV+ later in the month. The movie is one of two that Ronan stars in and could be contenders in the coming awards season. The actress will campaign in the Best Supporting Actress category for Blitz and Best Leading Actress for The Outrun, in which she portrays an alcoholic who returns to her family in Orkney
