Logan MacPhail, the killer of 15-year-old Holly Newton, can now be named, according to a ruling made by Judge Sir Nicholas Hilliard KC. MacPhail, Holly’s ex-boyfriend, attacked and stabbed her repeatedly in an alleyway in Hexham, Northumberland, in January 2023. The judge’s decision to lift reporting restrictions was made following an appeal by media groups, including the BBC, ahead of MacPhail’s sentencing.
During his trial, MacPhail had anonymity due to his age, but the judge lifted the reporting restrictions, stating that the public had a right to know the “full detail of the offences”. Holly’s parents also called for the crime to be classified as a domestic violence offense rather than a knife crime.
