London Heathrow: Celebrity photographer Denis Stone's legacy lives on

The son of the late Dennis Stone says his father’s photographic legacy will continue to live on. Duncan Stone spoke to BBC London in the aftermath of his father’s death. Dennis Stone famously photographed a range of stars at Heathrow Airport during a career that exceeded sixty years. His creative talent lay dormant until the age of thirteen when his mother gave him a Kodak camera. From there, he began to develop his skill and knowledge to become one of the airport’s most recognized photographers.

Freelancing for the airport from the age of 34, Stone’s reputation grew, and a range of celebrities would not think of traveling in or out of London without a picture from Dennis Stone. Stone’s favorite celebrities to photograph included Paul McCartney, Joan Collins and Rod Stewart. Stone had a particular fondness for Joan Collins, whom he considered a great mate of his.

Stone’s family played a large role in his life and photography. The photographer’s wife Dorothy helped schedule visits for stars to the couple’s home for quick photo sessions. Together they had three sons; Duncan, David and Darren. All were taken under Dennis’ tutelage, with Stone senior teaching his sons the family trade. Three generations of the family are photographers, with Duncan Stone still working, filming King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Describing his father as the ‘godfather of Heathrow paparazzi’, Duncan Stone boasted that his father worked until just a decade ago.

The family put out a statement in tribute, stating: “His legacy will live on in his collection of iconic photographs of celebrities from past and present.
“He will be truly missed and will live on in our hearts and minds.
