Crucial moment in the Conservative leadership race

The final stretch of the race to become the next leader of the Conservative Party is well and truly on. While it may not be comparable to the US presidential election, this round of voting will determine the final two candidates who will then be selected by Conservative Party members. The current situation is a mixture of intrigue, phone calls, plotting, guesswork, claims of underhand tactics and quiet conversations. “We are pushing towards quite the season finale,” one MP noted.

James Cleverly, Robert Jenrick, and Kemi Badenoch are the remaining three candidates competing for just two coveted tickets. James Cleverly is currently the favourite to secure a place in the final pair after an impressive performance in the latest round of voting. He obtained 39 votes, considerably more than expected, and capitalised on the momentum from his recent conference speech.

Meanwhile, Jenrick came second with 31 votes, while Badenoch received 30, just one vote behind Jenrick. Nonetheless, there are now 20 votes looking for a new home after Tom Tugendhat’s elimination. While 20 might not seem like a significant number, it is in an electorate of only 121.

The tussle is now between Badenoch and Jenrick for the second ticket to the final. Badenoch’s supporters are somewhat disappointed with her performance, but it is thought that there are Tugendhat supporters who are anti-Jenrick due to his recent comments about British special forces. Badenoch’s supporters believe there is a real chance to secure a place in the final two

Ahead of the election, a site called Conservative Home has analysed potential pairings of leaders and assessed the voting intentions of party members. The site predicts that as things stand, James Cleverly could beat Robert Jenrick, but Kemi Badenoch could win against James Cleverly. As a result, MPs who want to stop Cleverly from winning must back Badenoch, and those who are against Badenoch must vote for Jenrick.

The stakes could not be higher for the Conservative Party, which has not had a single moment as big as this since the disastrous election in July. The party members will determine who is best suited to fight the opposition and become the next leader of the Conservative Party
