Days of disruption expected after fatal flat explosion

A fatal flat explosion in Clackmannanshire has caused disruption around the site for several days. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, killed one man and left three others hospitalized. The local police continue their investigations into the blast in Alloa, which caused a two-story building to collapse. Emergency services have remained at the scene for safety reasons, forcing the cordoning off of Kellie Place and the evacuation of a small number of residents.

Ellen Forson, the leader of Clackmannanshire Council, conveyed that initial investigations show the wider area is safe. However, local people can expect time delays in the coming days to allow the investigation to progress without disturbance. She highly praised the tight knit community for showing support during this difficult time.

According to locals, the explosion sounded like a sonic boom when it happened on Sunday night at around 6:00 pm. Two men, aged 72 and 19, and a 49-year-old woman were taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital for treatment. Both rail authorities and the emergency services attended the scene because it is on the bridge of the local railway.

Police Scotland’s Ch Insp Kat Thompson thanked the local community for their assistance, stating that their inquiries are ongoing as they work to establish the complete circumstances of what happened. The fire service utilised urban search and rescue teams and heavy rescue units among the resources they had deployed on the scene. On Monday, gas engineers began work in front of the damaged flat in a bid to get the area safe. The authorities hope to make the area safe as soon as possible
