Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party in the UK, has made changes to his team following the departure of his former chief of staff, Sue Gray, after only three months in Downing Street. According to the Financial Times, the departure came after weeks of internal criticism and a “power struggle”. Meanwhile, the I newspaper reports that election strategist Morgan McSweeney has replaced Gray, to counter claims that the government is “stalling”. Gray was “shifted” to the role of envoy to the regions and nations, and will take a pay cut.
The Times suggests that Gray was “ousted” by McSweeney’s supporters, a claim supported by an ally of Gray who accused them of orchestrating a “coup”. The Daily Express states that Ms Gray had fled a “sinking ship”, which the prime minister has been “plunged into a crisis”. The Metro suggested “accusations of chaos and crisis” in Sir Keir’s administration following Gray’s departure.
The conflict at the heart of these events has been taking place against a backdrop of commemorations marking the first anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October, an assault which has prompted serious Israeli retaliatory measures, the Guardian reports. The war has escalated on two fronts, with the possibility of a retaliatory strike against Iran described as “growing”.
The Daily Mirror led on the anniversary of the attack and featured the plea of the mother of British hostage Emily Damari, who remains in the custody of Hamas. She called for her release, stating: “We cannot let another day pass”. Meanwhile, the Daily Star issued a warning to swimmers, stating that previously extinct giant beavers could be “on the rampage” as scientists pledge to bring the animal back to life
