In an effort to honor her daughter’s memory, the mother of murdered backpacker Grace Millane has completed a challenging trek to Everest base camp. The 22-year-old from Wickford in Essex was tragically killed on a Tinder date in Auckland back in 2018. Her mother, Gillian Millane, has completed several other challenges in memory of her daughter in the past, but said that this one was the toughest so far due to heavy snow reaching her knees and challenging weather conditions.
Mrs. Millane embarked on the climb to raise money for White Ribbon, a charity focused on ending male violence against women. Despite the difficult conditions, she emphasized that she had an amazing team that supported her every step of the way.
It took her team a total of eight days to get to the camp, which is situated at an altitude of 17,598ft (5364m), and four days to come back down. At the top, Mrs. Millane left a stone engraved with her daughter’s name alongside one with the name of her late husband David, who died from cancer in 2020. She had previously left stones with their names on at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After Grace’s tragic passing, Mrs. Millane started the Love Grace initiative, a charity that collects donated handbags and fills them with toiletries for domestic abuse victims, inspired by her daughter’s love for handbags. The organization has filled over 20,000 bags for women in the UK and across the world, and Mrs. Millane was made an OBE for her contributions to domestic abuse victims’ cause.
Despite the challenges and the pain of losing her daughter, Mrs. Millane has found a way to channel her grief into an admirable cause. She continues to honor her daughter’s memory in unique and impactful ways while making a difference in the lives of others
