Cheshire strongman fears he will never compete again

Dan Jones, a strongman who suffered a horrific injury during a competition in September, has revealed that he might not be able to compete again. During the contest, Jones tore both patellar tendons when he raced with 80kg. Since then, he has been in the hospital, with doctors unsure about how the injury occurred.

Having undergone surgery and been discharged from the hospital on Friday, Jones said that his biggest goal is to get home and reunite with his daughter, who has reached significant developmental milestones since his injury. Jones missed her first day of nursery and missed her learning to crawl. “If I can train and compete after that, that’s a bonus,” Jones said.

Jones described the injury as “horrendous,” and that it felt like he was “on fire.” He said that every time he looked down, he felt sick because his kneecaps were two or three inches higher than they should be. “We still don’t know why the first one went. It’s crazy. This was actually the lightest event and the safest one,” he said, as he had picked up a car and pulled a truck earlier that day.

US strongmen who have previously suffered the same injury have contacted Mr Jones, explaining that they were unable to walk for three months. “I’m doing pretty good considering I only got operated on three-and-a-half weeks ago,” he said. Despite missing important moments with his daughter, he said being in the hospital reminded him of how important training and family time was for mental health.

Jones has since celebrated taking his first steps after the injury and looks forward to getting home and celebrating his daughter’s first birthday
