Several migrants including child die in Channel crossing attempt


Several migrants, including a young child, lost their lives while attempting to cross the English Channel, as per the French authorities. According to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, the child was “trampled to death in a boat”. He called it a “terrible tragedy” while accusing people smugglers of having “the blood of these people on their hands”. The local newspaper La Voix du Nord confirmed that at least four migrants died during two separate incidents. A local official is slated to provide further details at a press conference in Calais.

The AFP news agency reported that rescuers received a call for assistance from a migrant boat heading to Britain on Saturday morning and retrieved 14 passengers, including the child, from aboard. One of the migrants on the boat who was injured was airlifted to a hospital in Boulogne, France, and the remaining passengers continued on their journey. However, officials confirmed that the child’s body was found in the boat.
