Burger King: New Tunbridge Wells site gets worst hygiene score

A Burger King restaurant in Kent has received the lowest food hygiene rating of any of the chain’s branches in the UK. Inspectors from the borough council criticised the Tunbridge Wells site for using “dirty and greasy” equipment. During the August inspection, the outlet received a rating of one out of five, which indicates that “major improvements” are required.

The environmental health officer subsequently assessed the restaurant as having implemented all of the necessary corrective actions and awarded it five stars. A Burger King spokesman stated that the company takes food safety and hygiene extremely seriously and is working closely with environmental health officers to maintain the five-star rating.

The site opened in August and occupies an historic Grade II-listed building that was previously home to WHSmith. Burger King submitted a planning application in September 2023 in order to take it over.

The report noted that “There is a risk of cross-contamination if the probe is used on food that is not fully cooked and then used again on a cooked or ready-to-eat food without adequate disinfection in between.”

Local Democracy Reporting Service revealed the food hygiene inspector’s conclusion. The probe thermometer used to check temperatures when cooking of food was declared dirty and greasy and therefore wasn’t adequately cleaned and disinfected between uses.
