Watch: Dangerous driving caught on camera

People are helping police to catch reckless drivers by filming dangerous behaviour on their phones, helmet cameras, and dashcams. Every year, police in England and Wales receive 150,000 clips and it’s estimated that 90% of them result in drivers being sanctioned. Special portals have been set up by some police departments to allow the public to easily submit footage, such as the West Midlands operation targeting dangerous driving.

The amount of footage caught on camera has been increasing thanks to technological advancements, making it even easier for the public to capture evidence of reckless driving. This footage is then used to prosecute drivers who have been caught breaking traffic laws, endangering others on the road.

The rise of social media has also played a role in the increase of footage submitted to police. Many people now share their videos online, hoping to raise awareness about dangerous driving and to help prevent future incidents. Police departments now devote resources to analysing such videos to identify not only dangerous drivers but also potential hazards and accident-prone areas.

While cameras can help to deter dangerous driving, some drivers are still unresponsive to the technology. Police hope that continuing to publicise the issue and encouraging people to submit footage will ultimately help to reduce the number of accidents caused by reckless driving. The footage provided by the public has already helped to prosecute many reckless drivers and made the roads safer for everyone
