M6 Thelwall Viaduct: Warning after lorry plunges 60m from bridge


Following a major lorry accident on the M6 near Warrington, authorities have begun a challenging repair operation to fix the motorway bridge. On Monday evening, a lorry fell 60ft (18m) off the Thelwall Viaduct and onto an embankment below. Only two of the four northbound lanes on the viaduct are currently operational, with National Highways warning drivers to plan extra time if travelling through this area.

Cheshire Police have declared that the driver of the lorry did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service employees responded to the accident by using specialist tools to enter the lorries cargo hold and cool it down, while also containing a bio-diesel fuel leak from the vehicle’s tanks.

National Highways said that the repair operation was an extensive process that would take much of the morning before being completed; as such, local police have urged motorist to avoid the accident area and to take alternative routes.

The Thelwall Viaduct accident is one of several recent lorry crashes on motorways in the UK. In just a single week last year, two separate lorry accidents snarled traffic and closed off several important thoroughfares, fueling concerns regarding lorry safety and regulation among motorists and political figures alike
