An eight-year-old boy from Frizington, identified as Jay Cartmell, has tragically passed away following an incident which left him with a gunshot wound to the face and head. The incident occurred on land close to the A66, north of Warcop in Cumbria, on Saturday afternoon. Despite efforts to save his life, Jay later died in hospital from his injuries.
A man in his 60s, who was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, has since been released on bail. The authorities have not yet disclosed any details about the man or his relationship to the victim.
Following the tragic incident, Superintendent Matt Kennerley from Cumbria Police said, “This is a heart-breaking incident and we are working with partner agencies and doing everything we can to support Jay’s family during this difficult time. We would like to reassure the public that this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public.”
The police have urged anyone with information to come forward, and have stated that they are not seeking any further suspects at this time. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jay’s death continues, as the community mourns the loss of a young life taken much too soon
