A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Dundalk, after stealing a car from Belfast with a teenage girl inside. The car was parked in the south of the city when the theft occurred on Saturday night. The car was spotted being driven at high speeds on the A1, heading towards the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Authorities contacted the Irish police, who located the stolen vehicle and arrested the suspect.
The passenger, a 17-year-old girl, was able to escape from the car unharmed after it stopped on the Saintfield Road in Lisburn, a short distance away. The car was later found abandoned on the Newry Road in Dundalk, and the driver was arrested nearby. The man remains in custody, being interrogated about the incident.
Police have expressed their relief that the passenger was able to escape without harm, despite the reckless behaviour of the suspect. The theft, which required close cooperation between the Police Service of Northern Ireland and An Garda Síochána, was resolved without any injuries or damage.
