Russell Findlay, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, has appointed Rachael Hamilton as the new Deputy Leader. Hamilton, who has represented the southern Scottish constituency of Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire since 2016, was also the party’s spokesperson for rural affairs and islands since 2021.Party members think that Hamilton will play a fundamental role in transforming the Scottish Conservatives, and increasing public support for their aspirations.
“I know from speaking to my constituents in the Borders that many of them have lost trust in politics and politicians don’t understand them. Russell Findlay is different and is determined to change that,” Hamilton said in acceptance of the appointment on September 5. She claimed to be delighted to lead with Findlay and is confident that together, they can provide concrete results for the people who share their sentiments of opportunity, ambition and generosity.
Findlay said with Hamilton as his deputy leader, he plans to implement changes that demonstrate the Scottish Conservatives have “a positive vision to reconnect with people who share our values of aspiration, opportunity and decency.” He pointed out that Hamilton has previously stood up for those who do not feel represented by the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Labour.
Prior to Hamilton’s appointment, Meghan Gallacher was the Scottish Conservative’s Deputy Leader.
