A wheelie bin left by a resident in north London exploded, causing a narrow escape for two refuse workers. The incident took place after the bin was crushed by a lorry’s impactor, leading to the bin and debris in it being thrown out onto the street. Barnet Council disclosed that a combustible item, such as a battery, gas canister or aerosol, had been incorrectly placed in the bin. The council said the workers concerned were not injured.
Councilor Alan Schneiderman commented: “I hope this helps people to understand how important it is to properly recycle items such as gas canisters and bottles, batteries and aerosols, as on another day we might not have been so lucky.”
