UK Weather: Heavy rain forecast as thunderstorms hit UK

After a weekend of thundery downpours across many parts of England and Wales, the Met Office has issued a new amber warning for heavy rain due on Monday across parts of central and southern England. The forecaster predicts that the heavy rain will pose a continued risk of localised flooding and travel disruption. Meanwhile, yellow warnings are still in place across England and Wales and the weekend’s thundery downpours are expected to continue through Monday.

Since Friday, thunderstorms and heavy rain have battered several regions across England and Wales, causing numerous cases of disruption. So far, there has been a confirmed tornado in Aldershot, Hampshire, and 13,000 lightning strikes recorded. Storms were particularly prominent in north-east Wales and the Midlands and serve as a reminder to all residents in these areas to stay alert and informed. On Saturday, a house in Wrexham was struck by lightning, causing a fire.

Meteorological fall starts on Monday, with the autumnal equinox occurring around lunchtime. Coinciding almost perfectly with this transition is certainly the more autumn-feeling weather that various parts of the UK are experiencing. Another batch of thunderstorms is anticipated to sweep over Wales, the Midlands and southern England on Sunday, and some locations are expected to experience up to around 100mm of rain throughout the day. There could be difficult conditions on the road for motorists, with a small possibility of rural communities being cut off by flooding.

In summary, after last weekend’s storms, further thundery downpours and heavy rain are expected to hit the UK this week, with more amber and yellow warnings still in place for many parts of the country. Additionally, temperatures are due to drop below the late-September average, and expert advice is to stay alert and informed of any updates about weather conditions in one’s area
