The father of Rhiannon Williams, who died by suicide at the age of 24, has spoken out to urge other parents to be aware of the seriousness of mental illness. The latest figures reveal that Wales had the highest suicide rate for a decade in 2023, with an average of one person taking their own life per day. Gareth Williams, who lives in Swansea, wants to draw attention to the importance of early intervention and effective treatment of mental health problems.
Rhiannon was studying for a master’s degree in creative writing in London when she abruptly returned home. She had been receiving professional help for depression and anxiety, but her parents noticed a decline in her condition in the months prior to her death. After her death, her parents discovered notes in her private diaries detailing the websites she had used to plan ending her life; this continues to be investigated prior to the inquest.
The Jac Lewis Foundation, a charity that has been commissioned by the Welsh government to provide a new national advice service, provided support to Rhiannon’s family. Mr Williams praised the counselling that the organisation provided, stating that it helped him in dealing with the “depth charge” of emotions that followed his daughter’s death. He believes that it is crucial for parents to provide their children with reassurance that life goes on, even after tragedy.
The lead liaison officer for the national advisory liaison service, Gwyn Augustus, said that his team typically receives between six to ten referrals for counselling following each suicide. Swift and free counselling is provided, alongside play therapy to support bereaved children. Augustus stressed the importance of helping people when they are at their most vulnerable, in order to prevent further devastating consequences. The Welsh government is expected to launch a refreshed suicide prevention and self-harm strategy by the close of the year
