Online overtakes TV in survey of news habits

According to research from UK broadcast regulator Ofcom, online sources have surpassed traditional television as the most popular place for news among UK citizens. Of the respondents surveyed, 71% stated they used online services for news, while television news bulletins garnered 70%. Online sources and social media both saw growth since last year, rising from 68% to 71% and from 47% to 52% respectively. For individuals aged 16 to 24, social media was most frequently used for news at 82%.

The online news sources most commonly cited were Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. This is followed by Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. According to the study, 40% of respondents said they used Meta for news. While the BBC remained the most popular news source overall, with 68% of individuals stating they turn to the broadcaster for news, the regulator notes that people’s actions do not necessarily match what they express in surveys. For instance, the analysis of actual usage indicates that BBC News is the go-to source for news for 75% of the UK population.

The decline in traditional news providers continued in this survey, with newspapers and their websites, as well as television news, both seeing drops in usage from 39% to 34% and 75% to 70%, respectively. BBC News Online also saw a decline from 22% to 18%. The regulator’s survey did not measure usage of particular news websites.

The largest growth in terms of news sources was seen by YouTube, which was used by 19% of respondents in this survey. In the previous year, YouTube was referred to as “other online,” and its rise in popularity was attributed to this change. While other news sources such as The Guardian and the Daily Mail held steady similar figures to last year (10% and 14%, respectively), traditional newspapers saw a significant decline. Even individuals over the age of 55 who reported reading print newspapers dwindled from 38% to 32% over the course of a year.

The television channel that received the most mentions in the survey was BBC One, with 43% of respondents stating they turn to the channel for news. This places it far ahead of competitors ITV and Facebook, only garnering 30% each
