The Taliban government has caused the Afghan embassy in London to close by dismissing its staff, leading to its shutdown by the end of September as requested by the UK government. The mission was previously staffed by officials appointed during the pre-Taliban Islamic Republic of Afghanistan government. The Afghan ambassador to the UK, Zalmai Rassoul, has expressed gratitude for colleagues and other co-operators who have supported the embassy. The embassy, first established in London in 1922, will close on the 27th of September.
Following the Taliban’s announcement in July of cutting ties with several embassies established under the former regime, it proceeded to dismiss the staff from some embassies, including the one in London. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman confirmed the embassy’s closure was due to the Taliban’s dismissal of its staff. Afghan diplomats at the embassy in Princes Gate have reportedly been advised to leave the UK or apply for political asylum.
According to the private Etilaat-e Roz website, the UK government had asked Afghan diplomats to close the embassy as they refused to hand it over to the Taliban. The Taliban’s foreign ministry announced in July that documents issued by Afghan embassies in some European countries, including the UK, would not be recognized due to a lack of coordination.
UK troops left Afghanistan at the end of August 2021, ending the 20-year-long military involvement in the country. As Taliban troops proceeded to overthrow the Afghan government, the British embassy in Kabul withdrew all staff, temporarily moving them to Qatar where they continue to operate. While some Afghan embassies in Europe have continued to operate, others including the embassy in Washington DC have been forced to close due to lack of support from the Taliban government.
