This year’s Great North Run is poised for one of its biggest turnouts yet, with thousands of participants gearing up to take on the half marathon course. Approximately 60,000 runners are set to begin in Newcastle, then head through Gateshead, South Tyneside, and finish in South Shields. The elite wheelchair race will kick off at 10:30 BST, with the main race starting 25 minutes later.
Drivers have been advised to make plans ahead of time, as a number of road closures will be in place, including a portion of the vital cross-country M62. Weather conditions may not provide the most favorable conditions for the runners, with light rain and winds forecast and temperatures expected to hit 16C.
Honorary starter for the 43rd event will be Olympic silver medalist Kieran Reilly. Chris Johnson, from Sunderland, will be running in the race despite having raised more than £40,000 since being diagnosed with incurable cancer.
Debbie Bowling-Mowatt and a team composed of her father’s former colleagues from the fire service will be participating in honor of her late wife, Lindsay, who was a firefighter. The team will be fundraising for The Brain Tumour Charity. Roads, including the A167(M), Newcastle Central Motorway A167(M), the A167, and the A194, will be closed on Sunday.
To avoid traffic incidents disrupting a personal best, runners from the North West going to the Great North Run are advised by AA spokesman Tony Rich to familiarize themselves with the diversion route.
This year’s event is described by North East mayor Kim McGuinness as “the best of our great North East.” It is expected to draw significant crowds and to be an unforgettable experience for all involved
