The southern parts of the UK have been issued with a yellow weather warning, as the Met Office predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms. The warning covers much of southern England up to counties such as Sheffield and Stoke on Trent, as well as southern and mid Wales. The forecasters have warned that between 21:00 BST on Saturday to 18:00 BST on Sunday, spells of heavy rain, potentially accompanied by thunder, may cause disruption and flooding. Senior BBC meteorologist Nikki Berry stated that areas that had already experienced heavy rainfall across the south of the UK could experience localised flash-flooding.
On Saturday, people had to be rescued from parts of south Wales as roads flooded following heavy rainfall. A couple was rescued from their car, while another individual was rescued from their flooded home in Bridgeland. According to BBC Wales senior meteorologist Derek Brockway, one month’s worth of rain fell in just 24 hours at Swansea’s Victoria Park, making it the UK’s wettest place. Some parts of Kent and Surrey also had greater than half of their expected rainfall for September in only 24 hours on Thursday and Friday.
The weather warning for rain on Saturday covers all of southern and central England up to South Yorkshire and all of the southern counties in Wales. The Met Office has said that areas of heavy rain and thunder will move to the north, and subsequently, west across England and Wales. These heavy rain areas might become more persistent across western regions throughout Sunday, while slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are more likely to develop in the east. Although not very likely, there’s a low chance that a few spots within the warning area could receive 80 to 100mm of rain by the end of Sunday.
While England has seen the Environment Agency issue 17 flood alerts, with Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire being particularly affected, Wales has seen ten flood alerts. Further north, dry and sunny spells continue for now, with increasingly cloudy and mild conditions expected eventually. Into next week, fresher and cooler temperatures are expected, with an uncertain outlook. Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris commented that due to a more complex than usual meteorological pattern involving multiple corridors of heavy, locally thundery rain revolving around a slow-moving area of low pressure, the forecast for later in the weekend comes with larger uncertainties than normal. However, people should keep an eye on weather forecasts since warnings will be under review
