Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, is visiting the UK for two days, starting on Monday, during which he will hold talks with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The visit will see Blinken initiate a “US-UK strategic dialogue”, aimed at reinforcing the “special relationship” between the two nations. While in London, he plans to hold meetings on several pressing issues, including the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific, and Ukraine. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to meet with Blinken as well.
Blinken’s visit follows his first meeting with Lammy in Washington, DC, which took place three months ago during the Nato summit, where they discussed the pressing concerns of Ukraine’s economic, security, and humanitarian requirements to preserve territorial integrity and sovereignty. They also discussed securing a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages to establish a foundation for lasting peace.
The US Secretary of State has been an avid visitor to Israel, having been there ten times since last October’s Hamas assaults. Following his most recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blinken announced a Washington-backed “bridging proposal” designed to help resolve the pressing issues between Israel and Hamas and to get them closer to an agreement. As demands from Israelis to end the ongoing protests escalate, pressure is mounting on Netanyahu to conclude the deal quickly.
Meanwhile, the White House announced that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will travel to the US for his second formal meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday 13 September, following the success of his first bilateral meeting in July. The upcoming talks between Johnson and Biden are expected to focus on multiple global issues of mutual concern, including securing a ceasefire to end the war in Gaza and supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The two leaders will discuss the continued strengthening of the “special relationship” between the UK and the US.
Blinken’s visit is intended to promote greater cooperation between the UK and the US on a range of issues while reinforcing the unique and deep relationship that links these two nations. The dialogue planned appears to be a continuation of Boris Johnson’s commitment to strengthening the UK’s relationships with like-minded nations, especially in the aftermath of Brexit
