Sir Alan Bates, known for his campaign on behalf of sub-postmasters wrongly accused of stealing, has tied the knot with his long-term partner, Suzanne Sercombe, at Sir Richard Branson’s private island in the Caribbean. The couple, who had been together for 34 years, got married on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands last month. While the event was a surprise to the newly-wed Lady Bates, the Virgin tycoon had officiated the ceremony and made a speech at the wedding.
According to reports in The Times, the 70-year-old Bates, who was knighted this year for his hearty campaign for justice, had been invited by Sir Richard to visit the island. Sir Alan had reportedly said in an interview that he would love a holiday if Richard Branson was reading. The tycoon, who welcomed guests like Princess Diana, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, and Harry Styles on the island, said it was a joy for him to play a small part in Alan and Suzanne’s love story.
Sir Alan, who poured his life savings into their post office business, was sacked in 2003 after a faulty computer system showed money was disappearing. Subsequently, more than 900 sub-postmasters were prosecuted by the Post Office between 1999 and 2015. An inquiry was being conducted in this matter, which will be resumed on 23 September. Additionally, in July, the 70-year-old campaigner was awarded a law doctorate by Bangor University for his campaign for justice.
