Kaz Barrett, a carer from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, has seen her life transformed by her likeness to the character of Nessa from the popular TV show Gavin and Stacey. Her hairdresser believes that the show’s co-creator, Ruth Jones, may have based the character on Kaz. Since 2019, Kaz has worked as a professional Nessa impersonator, and her bookings have skyrocketed recently due to the show’s popularity ahead of its final episode. Her gigs include Barry Island coach tours, pub crawls, student club nights, and even a funeral.
Before becoming an impersonator, Kaz was running a local charity café on the high street in 2019. When Ruth Jones visited Barry to switch on the Christmas lights, Kaz dressed up as Nessa as a joke and ran up and down the street. The video of her antics went viral, and she realized that there may be a career in impersonating the character. Knock Off Nessa was born, and Kaz now has tens of thousands of followers on social media.
Kaz first landed a Nessa job as a stand-in for a BBC iPlayer promotional video, which Ruth Jones was supposed to have appeared in. Since then, she has hosted tours for two companies and has done numerous events and appearances, including some unconventional ones, like nightclub appearances and a funeral. With the show’s final episode being filmed in Barry, Kaz’s life has gone “completely mental” over the past six months. Despite being busy with work, Kaz hasn’t forgotten how significant the show has been for Barry. According to her, “There’s no one in the world, anywhere in the world, that’s not heard of Barry – and that’s because of them.”
While she has offered her services as a Nessa stand-in for the show’s final episode, Kaz has yet to hear back from Ruth Jones. However, that hasn’t deterred her enthusiasm for the show. As the hype builds up for the finale, Kaz didn’t want Nessa’s cliffhanger marriage proposal to Smithy to turn into a wedding. Instead, she quipped, “Dave’s gonna turn up and spoil it… it’ll open a can of worms.
