Maternity hospitals in Somerset have been criticised for providing “traumatic, super-hot and overcrowded” conditions, according to mothers who have given birth at the hospitals. Both Musgrove Park in Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital were declared inadequate by the Care Quality Commission in May. Issues reported include a lack of facilities, outdated buildings and midwives who do not listen to patients. One mother said she was forced to give birth in a public reception area because the wards were too hot, while another was ignored when she reported going into labour.
It is suggested that many of the problems at the hospitals arise from the buildings themselves, which are described as being “not fit for purpose”. Hospital officials are seeking to refurbish the buildings, which are currently outdated and run down. Musgrove Park was listed in Boris Johnson’s 2019 Conservative election pledge for hospital upgrades, but the necessary funding was not allocated before the general election in July 2024.
The Care Quality Commission found expired milk in the fridge and determined that there had been a “deterioration” in the quality of care provided at the hospital. The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust management say that significant efforts have been made to improve maternity services since the CQC inspection.
However, the planned upgrade of the maternity wards remains uncertain. Officials are hoping that review of the new hospital programme will bring about the refurbishment of the women’s and children’s centre. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said that a programme review was ongoing, providing a chance to replace the ageing hospital infrastructure and improve maternity care
