Wales weather: Flash flooding in south after torrential rain

Several areas of south Wales have been hit with flash flooding due to heavy thunderstorms, with one area described as “horrendous”. Firefighters have been extremely busy attending to multiple 999 calls, as areas affected include Cardiff, Port Talbot, Swansea and near Newport.

Talbot Road in Port Talbot had to be closed in both directions after the thunderstorms passed through the regions on Friday night. Whitchurch, Cardiff also had their drains overwhelmed, causing Merthyr Road to be submerged after a torrential downpour, with sandbags being distributed in Aberavon.

A Neath Port Talbot councillor, Stephanie Grimshaw, posted on Facebook, warning residents to be careful, due to severe flooding in Aberavon. A flood warning was also issued by Natural Resources Wales to Ilston Brook at Ilston, Gower, and two flood alerts were issued for the Gower Peninsula and River Ewenny and Vale of Glamorgan west.

David Rees, the Aberavon Member of the Senedd (MS), whose constituency includes Port Talbot, tweeted on X, “Terrible conditions tonight. Everyone take care & stay safe. Horrendous flooding seen in parts of the constituency.” Meanwhile, officers from Gwent Police had to deal with surface water issues on the A449 Newport to Usk trunk route.

A Met Office yellow weather warning, set in place for heavy thundery rain, was enforced until 02:00 BST on Saturday, with forecasters warning that up to 7cm (2.75in) of rain could fall in just a few hours. There have been several lightning strikes across the south of Wales, from Chepstow to Gower. The storms are expected to clear westwards overnight.

The flooded areas of south Wales have caused much disruption and have highlighted the power of the elements. Steps may have to be taken to prevent such flooding in the future
