In August, a riot erupted in Rotherham with many setting fire to bins and causing chaos in the city. Thomas Birley was among those who engaged in the violence and has since been jailed for nine years. South Yorkshire Police recently released footage of Birley standing on a burning bin outside a hotel that was housing over 200 asylum seekers during the violent unrest. This video served as evidence during Birley’s trial.
The 27-year-old admitted to three criminal offences: arson with intent to endanger life, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon. Considering he participated in violent activity that could have harmed the individuals staying at the hotel, as well as anyone nearby, his sentence seems justified.
Unfortunately, Birley was not the only person involved in this incident. Many others have been sentenced to prison time for their participation in the riots. With over 200 people already jailed, it’s clear that the authorities continue to take these crimes seriously and are actively working to bring those responsible to justice.
While it is important to exercise the right to peacefully protest, it is unacceptable to resort to violence and destruction. Hopefully, this incident serves as a reminder that such actions will not be tolerated and that justice will be served. South Yorkshire Police has set an excellent example by publishing footage of Birley’s involvement in the violence, which will hopefully deter others from taking part in similar events
