Bhim Kohli: Police given more time to hold murder suspect, 14

A 14-year-old boy who was arrested on suspicion of murder after an attack on an 80-year-old man in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, has been granted further time for questioning by detectives. Mr Bhim Kohli was attacked while walking his dog and died later in the hospital. While the boy remains in police custody, four other children have been released without any action. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mr Kohli’s death resulted from a neck injury, and the investigation continues.

The authorities are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of the park or Bramble Way between 6:00 pm and 6:45 pm on Sunday evening to come forward and provide crucial information. Detectives continue to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the incident as they seek to establish what happened in the park during that time. Detective Inspector Emma Matts describes Mr Kohli’s passing as “extremely tragic and upsetting,” not only for his family and friends but also for the wider community. She added that family liaison officers are supporting the family, and local policing teams have been dispatched to the area to provide comfort and address any concerns.

The police cordon in the park has now been lifted, while the St Crispin’s Church in Edward Avenue has offered to open its doors from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday for individuals who wish to light a candle in memory of Mr Kohli. However, because of prior police contact with the victim, Leicestershire Police made a voluntary referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) and has now submitted a mandatory referral following further interaction with the organization. The IOPC, for its part, has revealed that it will evaluate the case to determine if additional actions are necessary.

The death of Mr Kohli has resulted in significant public interest, and his family expressed gratitude to everyone for their kind words and condolences, stressing, however, their need for privacy at this difficult moment. The circumstances of the recent assault have been unfortunate and have highlighted the need for everyone to prioritize peace and security in their communities
