Jas Athwal: London Renters' Union calls for landlord MP to resign

Labour MP Jas Athwal, who owns 15 properties and is the largest landlord in the House of Commons, has been called upon by the London Renters’ Union (LRU) to quit after an investigation by the BBC discovered black mould and ant infestations in his rental properties. The tenants also reported deficient communal areas, defective lights, and loose fire alarms. One tenant who made a complaint about the presence of ants stated that it was affecting their child, while another expressed concern about the potential loss of their housing if they claimed benefits.

The LRU, composed of 7,000 members throughout London, has written to Redbridge Council urging them to investigate the former leader of housing law breaches. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated that it was “unacceptable” for any landlord to have such a condition of the property and that it did not matter who owned it.

Athwal referred to his disappointment with the condition of the flats and stated that he had dismissed the management company that was responsible for looking after them. Additionally, he confessed that his flats lacked the necessary licenses that he had established as a Redbridge Council leader, despite claiming otherwise earlier.

Hester Sullivan, an LRU spokesperson, indicated that renters would not be able to rely on the Parliament to fix the housing crisis if Athwal were to remain in office. She also stated that by declining to rent to low-income renters who rely on housing benefits, he is disadvantaging a considerable portion of the population who do not have easy access to affordable housing
