Police in Surrey have confirmed that three children found dead alongside a man in Staines, Surrey, were all aged under four. The bodies were discovered by officers following a call by ambulance staff on Saturday. All those found were said to be related, while neighbours have suggested a Polish family with twins were living at the property in question. Formal identification and post-mortem examinations to establish the cause of death for the deceased are set to follow.
A police spokesman stated that an investigation had been launched and that “no third-party involvement” was suspected at this stage. Surrey Police has also referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to previous contact with the family. The mother and next of kin have been informed by investigators, and are being supported by specialist officers.
Responding to the tragedy, local Police Commissioner Lisa Townsend emphasised that her thoughts were with the family as well as the wider community. Meanwhile, Tim Oliver, leader of Surrey County Council, has said that the “circumstances” surrounding the incident must be allowed to emerge, noting that the council was “devastated by the loss of life in our community”.
