Forecasters are warning of thunderstorms and heavy showers that are expected to hit England and parts of eastern Wales on Sunday. A yellow warning was issued by the Met Office, urging people to “be aware” since there was a “small chance of flooding and disruption” in some areas as a result of the storms. The warning came into effect from 04:00 BST on Sunday, covering large swathes of southern England, the Midlands and the north, and will last until 21:00. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to develop in southern England on Sunday morning, moving northwards over the course of the day.
The warning covers an area stretching from the Isle of Wight to Newcastle upon Tyne in central England, while in Wales it affects Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen and Wrexham in the east of the country. The Met Office warns that “frequent lightning strikes and hail will be additional hazards” in southern and central England, adding there is a chance of flooding. BBC Weather predicts that the UK will experience some very warm and humid air, which will bring thundery downpours northwards across the central spine of England and east Wales.
Although the thunderstorms are expected to be quite hit and miss, in places where they do occur there may be some torrential rain, as well as strong, gusty winds and lightning. The exact locations of the showers are difficult to pinpoint, but staying up-to-date with the latest forecasts would be worthwhile. With the warmer and humid air, many areas are expected to experience temperatures widely entering the low to mid-20s Celsius, with some parts of south east England seeing temperatures of up to 27C
