Two people were killed during the Notting Hill Carnival weekend in two separate attacks. Cher Maximen, a 32-year-old mother, was stabbed on Sunday while she was with her daughter in the area. She died in the hospital on Saturday morning. Mussie Imnetu, an Ethiopian-British chef who worked at a restaurant in Dubai, was found unconscious on Monday evening in the vicinity of Notting Hill and, on Friday, the police announced that he had passed away from his injuries. He was in London as part of a visit from Dubai where he lived and worked. Both deaths are now being investigated as murder cases by the Metropolitan Police.
Commander Charmain Brenyah of the Metropolitan Police expressed her condolences to both families and the wider community and denounced the attacks. She also stated that the cases were now being treated as murder investigations. The organisers of the Notting Hill Carnival also released a statement condemning the incidents as being against the “carnival values.”
Shakiel Thibou, 20, has been charged with the attempted murder of Cher Maximen and has already appeared in court. Omar Wilson, 31, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent for the attack on Mussie Imnetu.
The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, and Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, expressed their sympathies to the families and friends of the victims. Mayor Khan also mentioned that such violence is not in line with the spirit that Notting Hill Carnival stands for.
At this stage, the police are appealing for any information that may help the investigation of the incidents. They have urged people to come forward with such information even if they think it may not seem like useful information. Anyone with information should contact the police on 101 or message the Metropolitan Police via X. Alternatively, people can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 8020/26AUG
