Jodie Grinham, a pregnant para-archer, has won bronze in the women’s individual compound, beating ParalympicsGB team-mate and defending champion Phoebe Paterson Pine. Grinham’s latest victory comes after she won silver in the compound mixed team event at the 2016 Rio Games, marking her first individual Paralympic medal. Hailing from Haverfordwest, the archer was trailing behind Paterson Pine by two points after the fourth end, but she scored 29 in the final end to secure the win.
Paterson Pine scored 26 in the final end and lost the tie 142-141 to Grinham, who is now seven months pregnant. The 31-year-old praised herself for the win, saying, “I’m really proud of myself, I’ve had difficulties and it’s not been easy.” Despite experiencing pressure this week, as she spent some time “in and out of hospital” in Paris, Grinham was determined to compete.
Grinham, who is healthy and so is her baby, shot exceptionally well and was driven by the idea of winning the medal. While her baby kept kicking, she was aware of the support she had in her belly, which reminded her of the support she had from her family and friends. The para-archer isn’t done yet, as she will be back in action on Monday in the mixed team compound alongside Nathan MacQueen.
Grinham’s pregnancy has not held her back, as she competed to the best of her abilities and won the bronze medal for her country. Her achievement inspires young people worldwide that nothing is impossible if one desires to succeed, and with a strong mindset, one can accomplish great feats. Grinham’s passion and hard work prove that she has the power to achieve anything she sets her mind to. The medal is a great addition to her impressive collection and will motivate her even more to continue breaking records and winning more awards
