Menomena, the Portland art-rockers, surprised fans with their first show in 10 years at the Revolution Hall in Portland, Oregon on August 10. It was also their first performance together since September 2014. The band led by Justin Harris, played their 2003 debut album ‘I Am The Fun Blame Monster!’ in its entirety, as well as other songs from their subsequent albums. The first half of their set was taken from their debut album while the other tracks included ‘Queen Black Acid’, ‘Ghostship’, ‘Rotten Hell’ and more.
Fans have taken to social media to express their excitement about the long-awaited reunion. One fan enthused about their love for the band and how he flew all the way to Portland for 36 hours just to attend the concert. Another concertgoer revealed how the band surprised the audience with their exceptional performances. Fan-shot footage of the concert is also available online for anyone that missed out on the opportunity to watch the gig live.
This reunion follows the surprise release of their three-track EP ‘The Insulation’ in April, which was quickly followed by expanded versions of their ‘Friend and Foe’ (2007), ‘Mines’ (2010), and ‘Moms’ (2012) albums. These albums each include several previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded during their respective album production cycles.
Their last full-length album was ‘Moms’ released in 2012, which received a positive review from NME. The album features intimate songs that addressed their relationships with their mothers. In the words of Dan Stubbs, who gave the album a four-star review, “All the while, they address one lyrical strand: their relationships with their mothers. Cheaper than a session with a therapist, and a much better listen.”
Menomena had a cult following in the early 2000s with their mixture of indie rock, electronica, and experimental sounds. With the band reuniting to release EPs and their earlier albums being re-released, fans will be excited to see what the future holds for the group and hope this marks the beginning of more reunion shows
